I would have never imagined owning my own insurance business. If you went through high school and university you’d think, “Oh wow I’m going to be an insurance agent!” Well, I’m not sure that that would be the case. As a matter of fact, I don’t even think there is a school that you can go to and say, “I’m going to be an insurance agent.” Although if there was, it would probably be packed because this really is a rewarding career.

You know, when it comes down to somebody who wants to do their own thing but be involved with a great organization. This is the spot.

If you have that right personality—you like people and you want to run your own business, there’s no better career.

The pay structure’s great. The hours are great. It gives you the flexibility. It gives you a sense of ownership and pride. I don’t see why you’d want to do something else when there’s such a great opportunity. No one ever wants to be an insurance agent, but very few people ever leave being an insurance agent. There’s a reason why it works out that way.

There’s tremendous opportunity to go visit your local Co-operators office and talk to the agent there and get a feel for how they run, how they interact with their clients. Because if somebody loves people and loves being in front of them and helping them, there’s tremendous opportunity to do that here every day of the week for the rest of your life, if you choose to.
