A Better Opportunity
Hi, my name is Chris Lofgren. I am a Co-operators agent in Calgary Alberta. I have been with the Co-operators for eleven years and an agent on my own for seven and a half.
I started with the Co-operators in the claims department in 1996 and then an opportunity came up here in 2002 and I thought the agency would be a phenomenal place to be.
I was working in the sales industry and someone suggested that there was this opportunity for you to become an owner of your own agency, and I really liked that idea.
A manager approached me and asked me if I had ever considered a job in sales in the insurance industry, and to be truthful, I hadn’t.
No one ever grows and says I want to be an insurance agent when I grow up. I was actually in university for engineering, then kind of transferred over, got into business, really enjoyed the business, really enjoyed the company. So I just kind of stuck around because I liked it.
One of the things that scared me when came to getting into insurance was the thought that, “Are all my family and friends going to think that the only reason I want to talk to them is so that maybe they are going to buy something from me.”
It's a respected profession in the community, and people actually kind of respect you more for it. They are just, oh, well, he's an expert at what he does. He understands what he does. It's not about just telling me something but rather giving me advice, and I think people really appreciate that.
I’ve seen how our insurance products, and advice, make a difference in the live of those people that I deal with.
I often have experiences where I’d be at the local grocery store and I see a client of mine who stops and asks me about their home coverage or maybe they had a question . . . can I help their daughter out with an insurance quote on her car. That feeling that the clients look up to you and respect you as an advisor and that they only want to deal with you to help them out with their insurance needs is pretty special.
One moment that stands out for me, in my career, is a client of mine who was faced with a total loss. It was arson and his house was engulfed in flames in less than seven minutes. Co-operators was there to help him and we restored everything back to the way it was and he is ever so grateful to the Co-operators, and that makes me proud.
The first that happened, where a client came to me and said that, you know, her husband passed away— and I spent hours with this client. I was happy that we were not only the first people at the table to help her with her insurance claim, but we had delivered the cheque before anybody else showed up.
When somebody passes away it’s our life insurance proceeds that go to help the widow raise her kids, or pay off debts. When somebody has a fire and they’re left homeless we rebuild their house and I don’t know how you can’t get excited about that.
